Warren First 931: Your local hub for all things community!
[00:00:38] Let's get ready to rumble. You are live at Warren First 931. We are actually at the Senior Night for the Wrestling and before, you know, I was trying to give the respect to the players, but they had their, they went out on the mat and they introduced one senior at a time and it was just so warming and to see the girls and the guys, it's just, it's amazing.
[00:01:00] One of the things about wrestling is you pour your heart. Since we won the district, we'll get to wrestle in the, in the state teams tournament. And then in a few weeks, they'll have the individual tournament. So everybody who makes state, so there'll be a big tournament. And I don't know exactly where that's going to be, but we'll find out. We'll let you guys know. But man, Warren County has done a great job. And right now they're, they're wrestling some matches.
[00:01:43] The expedition matches. Is that what you heard? Well, they had a few, but some of our wrestlers, we should win, win pretty candidly tonight. So, and guys, if you don't get on the Warren Sports app, it is a great little app. If you're not on that, I mean, it is so simple. It is so easy. Let me show you guys how easy this is. If I can go on my text messages right quick, just to show you the imaging. Nope, not that one.
[00:02:11] And just to let the folks know, we're wrestling Eagleville tonight. And we got a guy who's just coming. He automatically wins because they don't have somebody wrestling in that weight class. Oh, really? So that's why, so that's why we're, we should win this. But Eagleville is a young, a younger school of wrestling. Warren County has been doing it for a little while longer. Warren County has been running a lot longer. So it's a, it's really neat to see some of these guys who don't get an opportunity to wrestle, to get to wrestle, especially here at home.
[00:02:38] And we might even be able to get a coach there kill to come on with us and talk about what's going on in the future. So I see coach Ben Matheny of the middle school over here working, taking score. And the guys, if you've never done it, we might have to turn this camera around and let you see what's going on. Just so you can get the ambience of what we're seeing in front of us.
[00:02:59] But we got two young men, they look like to be on the heavier weights, maybe 190s that are wrestling right now. And these guys, you can tell they're a little, little inexperienced. But there you go, Rich. And you'll have to forgive me, folks. I get excited about this. Now, who's right? Do we know who's wrestling right now? I don't know who, who is wrestling. This is one of the guys who is not normally a starter. Oh, cradle, cradle, get him, hook him. This is how, you know. Sorry, sorry.
[00:03:29] No, live action. Roll over. So I'm going to do a quick screen share while you are in it to win it over here. Because I can't get the picture pulled up, but I want you guys to see this. As I'm trying to add stuff right quick so you guys can see this. No, I don't want that.
[00:04:00] It's not going to let me. Oh, no. It's okay. No, I was going to show the app. Select the tab, window, entire screen. So. Keep going. You're good. With the man down, our guy is, I think he's red. He's choosing bottom nine. Wrestling, you have either two colors, red or green. And I think we're red tonight. I think it's the home team. So, they used to make you wear a wristband or a bracelet around your ankle that would show.
[00:04:29] But nowadays, you don't necessarily have to have that. But, so, our guy was on bottom. Mm-hmm. And he's got to try to get out of control. So, there you go. Pull it off and stand up. I'm glad you're explaining this because I don't. There you go. Up, up, get. Up, up, up, up, up, up. So, a lot of this is balance. And, okay. Okay. All right. So, this round is over.
[00:04:58] I'm trying to pull this up for everybody so I can save this. And it's not letting me save it as a PDF file. It's okay. I move on. Folks, because we're in a rather different place than we normally are, our instruments are not working as we want them. They're not as friendly. But that's okay. We're going to figure it out because we want to be able to promote wrestling all year long next year. It's a shame that no one ever gets to see these matches. That's right. And, guys, we're riding high right now.
[00:05:24] So, hopefully, in the future, we'll be able to post more wrestling and have more camera angles for it. So, while you're talking, I'm actually going to try to do this get on the guest app already that we have so you guys can see what we see. It's going to be a little far distance, but we're going to make this happen. Okay, guys? Okay. So, our man is in control right now. He's on top. The guy that's on bottom, who's the guy in green, he's got to try to get up and get out of control.
[00:05:53] So, our guys, his job is to hold him down and possibly pin him. That's what we're trying to do. So, he's established control on top. He's trying to lock a half Nelson and turn him over. Roll him. Roll him. Get your leg out. Keep going. Drive. There you go. Drive. Do it again. And I just want everybody to know that this gym is packed full of folks tonight. There you go. He's got his feet in. He got three points.
[00:06:22] Our guy got three points for a near pin. And so, good job. Good job. So, he's. I'm going to show whatever. All right. So, when you guys get the visual, you'll understand what we're talking about for those that aren't familiar with wrestling. Break him down. So, this is exciting.
[00:06:52] This young man is trying to keep him down. Again, I think this is 190. But I tell you what. Let's go find somebody to get. Oh, we got coach. We got Anthony Lippey here in the house. We do. I do. And I'm trying to get this going so I can flip it around for them. Oh, there you go. I see you. And then I am going to mute the mic. All right. Guys, check this out.
[00:07:23] All right. Do we need to. Is that good? No, you're good. See, it's pointing at the. Oh, I'm just seeing the. Oh, it's because it's dark. Okay. So, we can go like here. All right. Now, you guys are seeing it live. The Warren County contestant is on top. We are the red team right now. He's trying to hold him down. There's a young man walking out to the court because the referee can't watch the match. And watch. Break him down again. Break him down. Pull him down. There you go.
[00:07:56] Good job. Sorry, guys. I'm getting really excited about this. I love this pool noodle technique. Well, yeah. Well, they can't keep up in the big matches. You'll have another referee. You'll have two referees. But you always have a referee taking the score, too. So, you generally have three referees in a typical collegiate match. We got Mr. Zach Sutton here who is a medical trainer. And it looks like we got a nosebleed here, guys. Well, I did hear, overheard that the team that we're playing tonight, they do have a guy that has nosebleeds. Oh, hey. So, they were just warning him ahead of time to get ready.
[00:08:25] I know a guy that I'm related to that had a nosebleed nearly every match. And that's one of the things. You get popped in the nose. This is one of the most physically intensive sports. So, a lot of people get really excited. Blood pressures are real high. And it's easy to pop those little capillaries in your nose. So, yeah. Is it like in the mouth? This area is the easiest to bleed the most of? Oh, you can. Is that correct? Well, you can, yes. The teeth? The nose? Yeah.
[00:08:52] With your gums and your oral track. Just about anything. That's why I can heal so quickly. But, hey. I was checking on my daughter because my husband is like. Just want everybody to know, Brian Carr brought his brother Patrick alongside, which is actually a former alum wrestler. Yeah. He wrestled. Well, he wrestled at, we wrestled at Millington, Tennessee. He got our scholarship. And from West Tennessee Wrestling, it's not very, it's not as big because there's no colleges in the greater Memphis area that wrestle.
[00:09:20] So, you have to go east or real far west to find wrestling schools. But my brother wrestled Division I at UT Chattanooga. Oh, that's awesome. Yeah. And that's where Chris went to college. Yeah. That's how they met each other. Yeah. So, that's really, really cool. How funny. How world meets. Yeah. You know. Okay. So, now we're getting back to the match. Our guy is on bottom. The eagle wheel is on top. And now, our guy. So, is. Turn it. Turn it to. Get to your belly. Get to your belly. There you go.
[00:09:51] So, he's down. And he's trying to. You can pull their heads? Well, you can pull their heads, but you're not supposed to pull their headgear. Get your base. I'm like. That's all right. I am the worst correspondent on this. No. So. I'm like. Oh. Oh. His mask is all on his face. He's bleeding again. So, and that happens. So, our guy. He's going to be down in what's called the base position. His job is to escape or get up or actually do a reversal and take control so him get on top.
[00:10:20] So, that's what we're looking at. So, and guys, I have to apologize. I have not watched a lot of high school wrestling here and I just still here recently. So, I can't remember what the point totals are as far as the scores. And because the score is in front of us where we can't see it. Our back is to the screen. Right. Our screen is in front of us, but it's not facing us. Right. So, we only see the back of the screen. I don't know what the score is. No, but I tell you what. Let me see.
[00:10:49] If we want to go to a commercial break, I'm going to go see about getting Mr. Brian Matheny, Coach Matheny on here and having him tell us a little bit about this wrestling. Why not? All right. All right. Keep it here at Warren First 9. Are you ready for your new Ford? [00:15:10] Tell these folks your part in wrestling and what's going on in Warren County here. So, my part starts back in about 2004 or 2005 when I came into coach with – his name was Tim Cross at the time. And we saw, you know, in the 2000 – or the 1996, 7, 8, 9, those years, those years that I wrestled,
[00:15:37] we saw an uptick in wrestling where we were competing state level, always ranked in the top, you know, top 10 in the state, you know. And we were just a tough team. And fast forward, I'm going to college, working with our high school program, came back, worked with Coach Cross. Coach Cross, he's not here anymore. He's gone somewhere else, thank goodness.
[00:16:03] But then Coach Turner comes in and we start the process of rebuilding the program that was. And what a rebuild you have right now. Well, this goes – this is, you know, Coach Turner. He's walking around here. He was – Oh, we got to stay on. He was here. He was in the beginning with me and we all worked hard. And, you know, we had a lot of good teams.
[00:16:29] We were talking about this team, how it would compare to our team and the team that we put out in 2008. That was always one of the most competitive teams that we've had. And, you know, if it wasn't for a couple of early coaching mistakes at the state tournament, we would have probably medaled as a team that year. So I think that when people say this is the best team we've ever fielded, they would be incorrect.
[00:16:58] I think this team would be right up there with us. Yeah. But we're – the difference is what we're seeing now is years and years of hard work that – and I'm going to give Ben a shout-out here. You know, what Ben has done for our youth program. Middle school. Starting with – and with the middle school and the time that he's put in there, we're starting to see the growth.
[00:17:25] You know, our middle school program, which I was lucky enough to be a part of this year, it's just – it took off. You know, for the first year we had a state tournament. Yep. We placed fourth in the state. Yeah. We were a breath away from being in the first, second – to wrestle for first place. Lost by ten points to Blackman. You know, but we were right there.
[00:17:49] And I was going to say, you know, because my son had to make a choice of – and he's in fourth and getting into fifth grade. And with his weight level – correct me if I'm wrong on this, but Ben was – he's starting to train kids as young as, you know, asking them to come on in fifth grade and just learn, you know, the basic beginner maneuvers before entering into middle school. Sure. Now, we have a youth program. Yeah. It starts as low as five years old. I was going to say, he was trying to tell me all about that. Yeah. And so, what we do is it's through AAU.
[00:18:19] And, you know, we have tournaments all throughout the season that will, you know, help these kids grow and help them to learn. And, you know, my son's in first grade and we've got him out there wrestling. And he wrestled in one of his first tournaments this weekend. And, you know, just – it's good for them to learn. Yeah. And as they grow, you know, they won't – you know, to be able to compete at the highest levels, you have to start them early. Yeah. And it's just like football, basketball, all of those things.
[00:18:49] The difference is – and the reason why we're so successful is that there's one Warren County wrestling team. Yeah. Whereas with youth basketball and baseball, you have all these travel teams. Multitudes, yeah. The AAUs of everything. Exactly. And so, these kids are never playing together no matter what. You know, you might have a good player on this team, a good player on that team. We have the best of the best. It's consistent. It is. And –
[00:19:12] And sorry to cut you off, but talking about this, you know, wasn't this also the first year in middle school that there was an eighth grade weightlifting class? Okay. So, we're starting to implement that through the county. Yep. We're trying to get the weightlifting instituted. Coach Turner was really big in trying to push that because we are so far behind.
[00:19:35] And if you look at our kids – and this will get into why wrestling is a great program to get your kids into because your kid may be 110 pounds and he's never going to be a football star. But he may be a wrestling star because he's going to wrestle kids his own size. And so – but we are trying to push for the weight program. I was talking to Mr. Hobbs, Chris Hobbs, the principal at the high school. He's working on implementing that at the high school.
[00:20:04] And we're going to try to push it down to the lower school to try to get them. Sorry, guys. I'm watching the rest of the match too. You can do it off the mat. That's all right. So, just to add, you know, that's just adding more to what we're seeing, the success and the growth of this program. And, you know, we're trying to do a little – you know, Ben goes all year long with football and everything else. And so, it can't be understated. Yeah.
[00:20:30] You know, Coach Turner was one of the first ones to come in and just change everything. I mean, he did. He just – he grew it and started it. And then Ben – actually, I coached Ben. I was going to say. I coached him. So, I take all credit for what he's done. But he has come in and just devoted himself to this. And he has grown it.
[00:20:54] You know, and Dave Holcomb, don't want to – Dave has come and he worked with the youth program for years and years. And just, you know, if it wasn't for these guys. And you see Coach Cathcart out there. Yeah. Mr. Cathcart has been with us since his son's wrestled with me back in the 90s. Shout out to Bun and those guys. Bun, yeah. And Kurt used to wear me out when I was a sophomore and he was a senior. You know we're going to tag him in this video. That's all right. That's all right.
[00:21:24] But Mr. Cathcart has been instrumental in building this program. He's been with us for years and years and years. And, you know, it's just been a blessing for us to see. But, you know, wrestling is one of those sports that it teaches you so many things. And not just – you know, we live in a world now where soft is okay. And that's not necessarily the best thing for people to know. And wrestling teaches you how to be tough.
[00:21:53] But it also teaches you with these coaches. And I'll tell you from – that's one good thing that, you know, we all are on the same page. You know, we're going to teach you to be tough and we're going to teach you to be respectful and do the right thing. Get to your belly. Get to your belly. There you go. Keep fighting. Use your legs and push. It's like we've been saying on our show as parents, you know, and getting into school as teachers and coaches. You are not just building athletes. You're building adults. We are molding men and women. Yes. And that's another good thing.
[00:22:20] You see the growth of our girls wrestling. It's massive. Just through the state of Tennessee in general, you know, you're starting to see girls only tournaments that are having 200 wrestlers in it. And that's unheard of. That's incredible. And so it's great to see. I was talking to Sydney from Wink Skin Care today and she was telling me back in 95 or 96, I cannot remember her name. Andy Jones. Andy Jones. Thank you. Andy Jones was one of our very first wrestlers here.
[00:22:49] Female. Female. Female wrestlers. And even went on to the state tournament. The state and everything. And let's talk about the big difference there. Andy was wrestling boys. Yeah. So that was huge. Game changer. Yes. And I hate to cut you off, guys, but we've got a fifth ranked young man right here. This is Mr. Xavier. Yes. Simmons. Simmons. Yeah. He is ranked in the top five in the state of this weight class.
[00:23:18] And he is putting on a clinic right now. He's just made a takedown. And guys, I apologize. This is live action. Sorry to cut you off. No. And sorry. And we would love to have Andy come on. This is our pilot show. So anything goes, right? Listen, Andy was tough. She really, it doesn't, it goes without saying what she accomplished for a female in this sport to go and wrestle in the state tournament. And she just, but she came to practice every day. And it was, you know, it was a grind.
[00:23:48] Yeah. Coach Fulham was our coach. I don't know if you guys remember Coach Fulham, but he is, he was. Oh, my God. He. Did he pick him up? Yeah, he picked him up. Yeah. Xavier's got to get that under control. Right there. That's. Yeah, you got to control him when you, when you put him back down. And that kid's left. Lord have mercy. So, so. Get him again. So he got it, got a penalty point there because he did not return him to the night safely.
[00:24:17] So it's got to be easy. There you go. There you go. There it is. There's the pin. Put your, put your chin in him. There you go. Chin. That's why he's ranked in the top five in the state right there, ladies and gentlemen. And some fun facts. We've talked about on the show before. Like, as far as Warren County wrestling in general, we're, what, what ranked what again? Oh, in the, in the state right now, we're ranked in the top 10. I think we're ranked ninth. Ninth.
[00:24:46] And Brian talked about Blackman and some of these prestigious schools. We're right up there with them, guys. We have. We're competing. Yeah. Correct me if I'm wrong. That Andy actually works at Blackman. She does. She coaches the girls. Yeah. Yeah. She does. I found all this out today. That's awesome. And I was like, we got to have her on. I know. Because she still lives here. Yeah. She, she, she, she does. She coaches down there. They have a bigger female program there. Here we have another. Jacoby. Another fifth rank. Top five.
[00:25:15] He's, in my opinion, he's probably top three, not top five. I agree. He is a phenomenal, phenomenal wrestler. Just a sophomore. Xavier's a junior. Yeah. So, I mean, we're not, we're only losing one senior, maybe two seniors, but one that was varsity. He's about to lock him up right here. Zarek, right? Zarek. There you go. That's a big hole to fill. But, just goes to show. And he's here right now and he's not playing. He's sick today. Oh. So, and Thursday's their big match. So, there's no need to push him. Yeah. I gotcha.
[00:25:44] We've got, I feel like we've got this from pretty, pretty well under control. There's no need to put him out there when he's, when he's feeling sick. Well, I think what we're going to do is, right after this match, we'll go to commercial break. Okay. And then we'd like to get Coach Lippey on here to tell us a little more about the sports app. App. And then we got to watch Jacoby do his thing. I mean, let him do it. Work his craft. But, yeah, Coach Bettini, we're going to have to have you on again. And I guess we've kind of left the cat out of the bag.
[00:26:13] We're going to be having a sport coaching show coming up soon. And we would love for you to be on it and to give us some insight into the history of Warren County. I'd love to. Where we're at. And because you're one of the principals in the school system and are connected with the kids and with the student body across the board, we'd love to get your insight. So keep going. Keep walking him. There you go. That's not it. That was perfectly legal under Mr. Official.
[00:26:43] I think he was just the kind of the kids. Teach really dangerous. Yeah. But he won't lose a point for that one. No, he should not. Yeah. See, this is what we're going to have to have is we're going to have Coach Brian on here and have him tell the Brian and Brian and Kelly show. BBK. There we go. Oh, there you go. BBK. I like that. I'll do that. Or KBB. KBB. And then use the Burger King. BBK. Have it your way. We're in Warren County. That's right.
[00:27:15] Think right on the spot. And I'll tell you, it's tougher at these smaller weight classes because everybody's so wiry and so quick to get a pin to power somebody. And that's what makes Mr. Odennell so impressive is that he's got strength as a softman to do what he's doing. As you see, he's got a man's. You're welcome. There you go. There you go. We appreciate you for watching. Oh, he's.
[00:27:41] Jacoby is also another product of Ben Matheny going out and dragging him out to race. Shout out to Coach Brian. We're going to get a near follow here. I'll be honest. For five seconds left. Four, three, two, one. When we had Zarek come on and then there's Jacoby, honest to God, when I saw him, I did not realize that he was a wrestler. And then when he told me that he's ranked fifth, I was like, holy crap, man. And that's the great thing about wrestling, though.
[00:28:10] You have Zarek who's 215 pounds. And then you have Jacoby who's 105 pounds. Yes. And they're both going to be successful because of the weight classes. You're not, you know, you're not. He's got great balance. He does. Because he was going back and forth with him in that garage. The thing of it is, is he's ranked third in the state now. And he still has a long way to go to reach his potential. His ceiling is just up there.
[00:28:38] So he's got a little brother, too, at Russell for the Middle School this year. Oh, all right. He's going to be tough, you know. Well, we know something about those brothers and beating up on them and getting beat up by them. That's right. So how long does a wrestling match or a wrestling event take? How long does it last? So just the team duel in general, it depends. I mean, you know, just a match in itself depends on how quickly you pin, how quickly the matches go.
[00:29:08] You know, if all matches go six minutes, and I've seen it, you know. And it seems like it goes on forever. Yeah. He'll hips up, hips up, hips up. He's good. He's got him. So that's a good example of how balanced he is. He's cross-facing him to get that arm. I feel like he can be an acrobat of everything. Yeah. That's the neat thing about when at the lower weights, they're very flexible and wiry. Yeah.
[00:29:35] And strength is you find more strength and bulk more at the higher weight classes. Yeah. But to have both at such a small weight. At such a young age, too. Yeah. I'm going to make a prediction that Jacoby may be – as Eric has got the ability to win a state title this year. If he doesn't, I would say in the next couple years, Jacoby's going to be – Yeah. He'll be the next. But, listen, we've got Burgess Galligan, Huck Damon.
[00:30:02] Those boys right there are just – they came through the middle school, and they're freshmen. They're stout. They're ready to go. I expect them to medal this year. Yeah. I mean, that's how tough this team is. They're just loaded with talent. And the difference is they've been there, and they know what it is to compete. Is that your wife? It says Lindsey Matheny. Hey, Brian Matheny. He loves wrestling. Yes, yes. Heart. Now, we're almost done with this.
[00:30:31] You're welcome, Lindsey. Anytime. Is it three rounds of – how many minutes now? Two minutes. Two minutes for three rounds. Okay. And so we're just finishing, I guess, round number two. Round number two. And how many points do we get for – and this is what I've got to explain to the people because we just jumped in. Right. But to win a match, if you pin, the team gets the greatest amount of points. Right. Six points. Six points. Six points. And then if you win by 15, it's called a tech fall.
[00:30:59] You get five points. If you win a major, which is eight points or more, it is four points. And then just a decision is three points. Okay. Okay. I'm in mom mode. I'm like – It can get difficult, especially, you know, my littlest – my boys are wrestling, and it's hard to watch them. See, you know, my boy's tough.
[00:31:29] But, you know, I think the first – if he does do wrestling, because he's been talking about it, but we had to make a choice between basketball or wrestling because the practices was around the same time. Sure. And I told Chris, I don't think I need to go to the first few practices and or a match. Right. Just so he doesn't – moms have something about their boys that changes a thing. So, Jacoby just won a tech fall by winning – being ahead by 15 points. That is correct. Okay. Kelly, we'll go to the commercial.
[00:31:59] Yeah. You can do that. Hey, Coach Matheny, thank you so much for being on. I appreciate it. And, yeah, to all you guys who tuned in, just for this guy, hey, thanks for letting us have him. Yes, thanks for taking – That's the other Coach Matheny at home. That's right. I love it. And keep it here at Warren First 931. Are you ready for your new Ford? [00:35:15] Put on the thing. And we're back. Daddy went to go warm up the car, so it's all good. Yeah, we're back here at Warren First 931.
[00:35:45] We are live at the senior night with our Warren County High School wrestling team. And, again, you know, talking with everybody here. It's just been an amazing night. And it's a packed house. And I just love how the facility, is this what y'all call it? Yeah, the indoor facility. Is multifunctional. Oh, it's awesome. I love this. You'd be surprised. A lot of times people that come from other schools, they come in, especially from like Murfreesboro, they come in here and they're like, holy cow, I didn't realize y'all had.
[00:36:15] Because a lot of school, I mean, this is one of the impressive things that we got here on campus that a lot of people don't realize. Yeah. Now, let me set this up. For those of you guys who don't know, this is Coach Anthony Lippe. He has been, how long have you been, now, he is currently the co-athletic director here at Warren County High School. But before he was co-athletic director, he was a basketball coach along with teaching. So, how long have you been in the Warren County system? Yeah. And tell us about being the athletic director this year. Yeah. So, let's see.
[00:36:45] That would go back to 2011 is when I started. And that was back when Malcolm Montgomery was coaching. So, I started my assistant coaching career under him. And then I helped Eric Baird. If you remember Eric Baird as a girls coach. And then I was with Chris Sullins for several years. Yeah, that's right. Helped the boys. And then for one year in the 2017-18 school year, I actually worked for Grant Swallows
[00:37:14] when Grant was the principal at White County. Oh, sure enough. Oh, wow. And I knew Grant from back in my Tennessee Tech days. I was a student assistant for the men's basketball program. At that time, Grant was, or I should say Dr. Swallows. I keep forgetting. Yeah, I wasn't getting his degree. He was assistant athletic director, I believe, over at Tech. So, I met him there. But anyways, yeah. So, he hired me at White County. Yeah.
[00:37:42] I helped Michael Dodge and Eric Mitchell there, both boys and girls. And then came back home. Oh, wow. And so, from that point, I helped Chris Sullins again. And then the next year, I became the girls head coach. So, I was a head basketball coach there for the girls for four years. And then that's when Chris Hobbs was hired on.
[00:38:06] And he hired me as a freshman principal and last year as the co-athletic director. So, I've been the co-AD for two years now. Oh, right. And so, tell me about what's going on in the world of sports here. And I know we can talk for a lot. Yeah. Folks, I apologize. And I keep calling you Coach Lippey because... No, that's what most people call me. But, yeah, Coach Lippey, we've got a basketball game going on right next door that he's going to have to get to in just a second. Yeah. But can you briefly summarize where Warner County Sports is?
[00:38:34] Or, I tell you what, guys, we're going to have to have him back on. But give us just a little glimpse into the future here. Right. Yeah. We've got just right in the middle of district play with, you know, our basketball teams. You've got wrestling senior night here. You know, archery has started. They should be having some tournaments here pretty soon. I know they're practicing. They use this facility as well. And then spring's right around the corner. So, you'll have softball, baseball, men's soccer.
[00:39:03] We're very excited to have our new program, Girls Flag Football. So, we're super excited about that. So, they're going to be coming around. And just a lot going on at the high school. And if I left anyone out, we've got tennis. Oh, wow. So, tennis is going to be up and going as well. And you've got track. So, I believe that's all. And it's hard to keep up with everything you have for so many sports. But, yeah, that's what's coming around the corner, just working through this winter season,
[00:39:32] getting ready for spring season. And tell the folks, just real briefly, because we've been plugging this off and on for the last few weeks, about this amazing app that people can use to find out more about football. Yeah. We're super excited to be able to offer that. It's our new sports app. And it's going to be the place where we do everything. Scores, updates, news. If you haven't downloaded it, go download it now. It's on Apple or Google Play Store. It's super easy.
[00:40:02] I've had nothing but compliments on it. And it's just a really good tool for us. But mainly, it's for the community. It's for the community to keep up. And the thing I like about it most is that it can really share some of the kids and student athletes that don't get a lot of exposure as much as they probably should. This allows coaches to put stuff on there. JV, freshman teams, things of that nature. I can't remember.
[00:40:31] Not long ago, there was someone that said, hey, I didn't realize that we had a JV kid hit a buzzer beater the other night. I saw that popped up on the app. And that was cool because you never hear that. Nice. But you only hear about varsity and this and that. So it really gets some exposure for those younger kids, maybe some teams that don't get a lot of exposure. Oh, like archery and wrestling. And what we've got coming up with these ROTC drills and Winter Guard drills.
[00:41:01] And the cheerleading. You've got Winter Guard. You've got the Anglers Club. There's tons of exposure. So we're really excited about that. You know, that was something I really wanted to tackle this year. Wish we could have gotten it done before football season because football hasn't even hit the app. I mean, we've got the schedule and everything. But we really we launched it on December 11th. And we that's when we said that it was going out to everybody.
[00:41:30] And so a little over five weeks, we have over a thousand downloads. That's incredible. Way to get a good job. Well, Coach, thank you for being the focal point of getting this thing or the nexus of getting this new technology into our hands. Because it really helps us out as parents and fans to know about this. And, hey, we've got a lot of things to look forward to in the upcoming future.
[00:41:56] We've got one of your old alum that's going to be hosting a sports show for us coming up. And that's going to be exciting. And it's going to be a live sports show where the community can turn up and come on out. And so we're super excited. We're getting stuff prepared for that. And the special guest will come on Thursday's show to promote it. Because she told me to wear certain clothes and we're doing it at the end. Because she's very specific. I haven't sent out the email yet.
[00:42:24] I told Anthony, I was like, Madeline wants us all in this email chain. But she's excited and stuff. And I know you are as well. Yeah, that's great for Madeline. I coached her years ago. And she's just an outstanding young lady. I love to see them come back and have success. So I'm excited for her and what she's doing now. Yeah, it's going to be great. We appreciate you giving us some of your time. And now you've got to get back over to the school. Thank you so much.
[00:42:50] And Kelly, this app. Oh, there's so much going on here. Thank you, Coach. Download it. Go download it. Download it. It's easy. Download that. Just scan a QR code. You've got it going. We will be back more with more hits. Here, and it's the perfect time for planning. Visit Randwalker Farms at 8240 Manchester Highway in Morrison, Tennessee.

[00:46:18] We are back here on Warren First 931 with... We're honored to have Senior Night. And this is... I hate that he's dressed in street clothes, guys, but this Mr. Zarek Hill are 215? Yeah. Okay, 215. You know, at least wrestlers can go up and down in weight.
[00:46:46] What's the lowest you've wrestled this year? 215. Okay, good. Okay. He hasn't had to cut a lot of weight this year. Yeah. So... You've maintained. I love it. I love it. And again, you know, like I said, he wasn't wrestling tonight because you were just feeling a little under the weather. But you have a match coming up Thursday, right? Yep. That's our region match against Stewards Creek. Talk about that. Like, what are... How do you prepare for something like that? Practice a lot of mental stuff because we haven't really gotten this far.
[00:47:16] I mean, we have, but it's different because we actually have a chance to get to Stewards Creek. For our sections... Well, we actually have a chance to get to State. Sorry. But for our sections, it's the hardest section in Tennessee. Yeah. So... You've got a lot of tough schools in this section. So, yeah. So, do you actually know who you're going to be wrestling at the 215 at Stewards Creek? Yeah. His name's Caleb. Have you wrestled him before? Yeah. I've been to him.
[00:47:46] Oh, you've been to him. Okay. Well, that's good. But he's going to... Hey, look, it's always hard part of the second match because... Yeah. They know each other. So, now it's like, what can you change up? Yeah. I mean, watch out. He's coming for you. He's got a secret move. You know? But another thing I was going to ask is, you know, did I read this right that we became district champs? Yes. Was that last week? Yes. Now, these guys, they wrestled a tight one. It was two.
[00:48:16] It was Cascade and Oakland. And, but the Oakland match was the tough one. And you guys wound up winning 37 to 31. Wow. And so, one pin could have decided, if it would have went the other way, that you could have lost the district. Yeah. It was 31-31. Oh, wow. And Raul was the last person to wrestle. And we're going to pin one right now. We're about to pin one right now. We're about to pin one.
[00:48:46] But you can't pin it. There it is. Tell me again. If you pin it, that means, like, you win the whole thing? Like, you win the match? Yeah. The match is over. Okay. And we get, how many? Seven? Six. Or six for a pin? Six for a pin, five for a tech, four for a major, and three for just a regular. Excellent. Gotcha.
[00:49:13] When you're in college, you're just going to have to come back and commentate these matches for us. Yes. Yeah, I plan on it. I was going to say, the matches are getting so hot. It has blown my phone up. My phone is overheated. We've been running cameras, the phone through a little screen showing the matches. So, yeah, we're going to take a break. Because we got this young, fine, young, strappy man here. Zarek Hill with us here, folks.
[00:49:42] Going to be wrestling this Thursday night. Which is in two days. And that's not a home game, right? No. No. It's that Thursday night. Okay. Well, good luck to you. Thank you. And again, all of Warren County needs to be sending some love and prayers to this whole Warren County wrestling team. Because each of them, as I'm watching it, they're tough. You guys are tough. Oh, man. Even the girls. So, did you wrestle this weekend for the dog pound? No. I didn't wrestle that. Okay. We had some JP guys.
[00:50:12] And some girls go up there and wrestle. Well, I saw some of the stories. And I was just talking with Maya Reagan over there. And she's a freshman this year. And she came in second place in her weight class. And when I looked at how many matches she wrestled over the weekend, it was a lot of matches. I mean, but that's good for these younger wrestlers that are just getting involved in this kind of. Because a lot of times you may not have somebody that meets your weight qualification at some of these smaller schools that can actually wrestle.
[00:50:42] So, this gives you a great opportunity to. And guys, I apologize. This is live action going on. Yeah. You can't see her now. I'm trying to cool my phone down. We just got a takedown. And I wish I could give you the play by play. So, if he pins him, even though this is the first match, is it over? Well, this is the first round. There's three rounds. But in the first round, I'm just asking for somebody that does. If he pins him, it's over. That's it. Yeah. Okay. Oh, but now he's got him.
[00:51:16] Go. Move your hips to his head. I'm sorry, folks. You're hearing this. Oh, God. But it's getting exciting. Oh, he's got him on his back. There you go. Yes, he won. You need to be here, Warren County. Sorry you missed that, but the matches are getting so hot and my phone's like burning up on me. Well, the nice thing about tonight with this being senior night is you didn't give your mom a heart attack tonight or anything. Yeah. I know your folks get so excited.
[00:51:47] I know your mom. Yeah. Yeah. You're going to be here. You're going to be here.
[00:52:15] I know your mom's like, oh, my God. Because they get so into it. I can see that. Look into it. Now, question. Who yells louder, your mom or your dad? My mom. Yeah. Because we have to. The small ones that you think are a little puny and quiet are the loudest ones in the bunch. My dad's usually taking pictures. Oh. Well, I did see him. And, you know, talk about, you know, coming out here and being recognized.
[00:52:45] How special was that for you on senior night? I didn't really know what to do with my hands. Okay, Ricky Bobby. I like it. Did I put him right up here? No. I didn't really know if I was going to do it again or not. I just got one try. So, I just kind of had to wing it. I got you. I love it. We got another pin. We got another pin. Drop. That's Huck. Huck Damon. Huck Damon. And is he ranked now?
[00:53:14] Or he's going to be before too long? More than likely, yeah. Put your chin in his chest. He needs a sick bag. Oh, is he going to do it? He's almost got him pinned. Oh, there you go. There we go. Yeah, little tricks like that. I mean, when he put his hand under and he slid his hip up. He got him right flat. God, y'all look ripped.
[00:53:43] I'm not trying to be rude or weird. No, but that's how big. These guys are like. But that's how physically intense this sport is. Yeah. And you used to see the girls. They look like CrossFit athletes. I know you were telling me. I saw some of them here. Well, I tell you what. We go to a break. Let's see if we can get some of these girls over here. Why not? I don't think any of them are wrestling. Yeah. Hey, guys. You've got to see Zarek Keel here tonight. Zarek, do you have anything to say in your shout-outs to any of the people? I'm on. She's over there.
[00:54:12] She's manning the booth, I think. Yeah. But, no. Zarek, hey. Good luck. Thursday night's match. We look for another pin. And we're looking for a ride to the state, man. Hope so. All right. All right. And y'all keep it here at Warren First 931. Are you ready for your new Ford? [00:58:08] All right, Brian. All right. Look what we found. A whole bunch of CrossFit models. I love it. These are the bad ladies of Warren County Wrestling. Wrestling. And it's not wrestling. It's wrestling. Wrestling. I love it. If you will, ladies, tell us your name and what classification you're in and what weight class you're wrestling. Okay.
[00:58:35] I'm Marlee Harris, and I am a senior, and I wrestle at 152. Wow. I'm Allison Swetman. I'm a senior, and I wrestle at 165. Maya Reagan. I'm a freshman, and I wrestle at 145. First off, it's senior night, and for you two girls, how special does this make you? It's really special, especially because my dad's my coach, so it was really sweet. I heard your thing, like the most memorable thing is having your dad being able to coach you.
[00:59:04] And, you know, some people out there might think, God, my dad's at home. He's at school. Now, tell everybody the experience of that, like how great it was, how much of a blessing it was. Yeah, it's been nice, especially because you can't get mad at me as much as you would someone else. I love it. And at school, we go to different schools. Now, I go to Cannon County, so we have a co-op for this.
[00:59:31] But when I was at Oakland, it was fun because we would eat lunch together and stuff. Aw. So as seniors, what is y'all's game plan for the future, like when you graduate from high school? Um, I'm going to go to Tennessee Tech and I'm going to major in biology and I'm going to go to pharmacy school. Okay. Um, I'm going to Cumberland University to get my BSN for nursing. But before that, I'm going to B-Sick and AIT for the Army Reserves. That's what I'm saying.
[00:59:59] And she looks familiar because she's a part of the girls group of ROTC. Killing it. Yeah, girl. Yeah. And, you know, one thing that, you know, when I interviewed those girls about this, you know, talk about, you know, just the camaraderie that you guys have. Not just in wrestling, but with JRTC. I mean, everything is just teamwork. It's like a family working together. It's really good to have people on your side.
[01:00:27] And look, I want to interject because we talked about you this weekend. I went to a conference at, uh, in Pigeon Forge and they were talking about how busy you are running from, uh, your drill practice on over to the wrestling practice. And just talking about how intense that must be for you doing two sports like that. So, uh, really cool to hear your story and to hear the things that are going on with you ladies. You guys are inspirational, if anything. And so that's what we want to do.
[01:00:57] And I'll tell you, I'm so jealous of your daddy because I wish my girls would let me coach them at anything. I don't care if it's, you know, underwater basket weaving. But, uh, no, I know as dad, uh, man, just to be with your children and get to do things like this. This is really cool. And now we've got the newest member of the trio here. Yes. And, uh, Maya, tell us about your experience this past weekend that you had. Um, this weekend I wrestled six times.
[01:01:21] I went four and two and I wrestled a girl that was ranked number two. Wow. And did you win? I wish. Oh, hey, you always got a, was it a good life learn lesson? Like for the next ones? Yes. It's very nice in wrestling because like even if you're not good, then you still get to wrestle against the good people and know what it's like. And you're able to learn so much. The experience of it.
[01:01:49] She also beat other ranked people other than that girl. I was going to say, you need to shout out to yourself. This is her first year. And let me tell you, she is a fast learner. To be doing this at this level as a freshman and never wrestling before. Ever? We all know she's an awesome dancer. Wow. But now, you know, she's an awesome butt kicker too. I was going to say, y'all are very lovely. You do not have to be, you know, a certain look to wrestle. You can be pretty and wrestle too.
[01:02:19] I want everybody to know that. I'm loving the eyelashes and the makeup. And then like the stretched out shirts. I'm looking at the fashion. Yeah, I just got this. I think she has one as well. We got this in the gift bag that we got for senior night. Oh, where did they get those? Those are so cute. Some placement. I love that. I'm not sure one of our viewers could tell us exactly where it came from. That's probably somebody who helped make them. Yeah. Oh, is this over? Yes. Well, that was fast.
[01:02:48] Yeah, it usually lasts longer when there's multiple teams. But since we're this one. Well, okay. Anything else, Brian? Ladies, you want to give a shout out to anybody? Oh, come on now. Any more girls who want to do wrestling? Yes. Yeah, come on. I don't want to be lonely next year. So next year, is this the only ones on the team? Yes. Yeah, I'm going to be the only one unless some girls come from the middle school. There you go.
[01:03:16] There is an eighth grader, but that's it. Oh, I love this. They're dancing. Now, what you guys are not seeing is the guys on the other side. Yeah, I'm adding y'all. Yeah, now there you go. Let's get y'all in. Now, y'all want to get in? Get in there. There you go. See, this is live action over here. Yeah, shake it out, shake it out. Do the dance. I don't like that now. You guys are one big family.
[01:03:46] Ladies, thank y'all for coming on today. We really appreciate it. We look forward to having you guys in the studio here sometime to tell more about what's going on and how you did at the state or what you're looking forward to doing at the state. So, guys, congratulations and good luck in your upcoming matches. Thank you. Thank you. And we're going to come back on a short break and we're going to actually talk to somebody, one of the alumnus, or an alumnus, somebody that's wrestled before. Brian's brother Patrick's going to come on. Stay tuned. Yeah, stay tuned.

[01:06:08] This is going to be fun, Patrick Carr. All right! You're back on Warren First 931, and I am a lucky lady between... I'm like the sandwich in the car. I'm in the middle, right? Oh, you're the... My dad would say, you're the cupcake snuggled up to a couple of turds. Oh my gosh! Is that what your daddy would say? He said that about my mom. She was the cupcake, and we were the turds. I love it. Well, again, remember, no matter how you clean a turd, it's still a turd. So...
[01:06:39] That's what my daddy would always say. But it is a wrap here at the wrestling match of the senior night with Warren County High School. Again, if you want any details on tonight's match and how they scored and who won what, you better download that app. Yeah. The Warren County Sports app. We might be able to pull it up right now. But guys, sitting in the middle here is my youngest brother. My little brother is what I call him, who's actually bigger than me and can turn me into a pretzel. This is Patrick Carr.
[01:07:09] Patrick was a collegiate wrestler. He wrestled at UT Chattanooga. He was a state qualifier, and he's won state championships in other forms of wrestling. He is an All-American. He was ranked fifth in a nation and national tournament. Really? Gave him All-American status, so he was a nationally ranked wrestler. I love you. And he wound up going to UTC. We grew up in Memphis, right outside of Memphis, and went to high school at Millington. But our parents were from here in Warren County, so we stayed real tight. Now we live in Warren County, and we love it.
[01:07:38] So Patrick's worked with a lot of these wrestlers, and he's just got a great wrestling background. And so we're very fortunate to have him in our community. And Pat, how long have you taught at Gary Steele's? So it's not Gary Steele's anymore. It's Legacy. Legacy. Okay. It just changed hands. Gary Steele sold it to Caesar. Okay. God bless Gary Steele because he was an institution in this community for a real long time.
[01:08:04] Especially with self-defense and karate and all the different forms of martial arts that he embraced and represented. So, yeah. So, Legacy. Now, are you still coaching there? I coach every Monday at 4 o'clock. And anybody. Anybody who wants to. So I have to. Depends on what you want to get out of it. I can teach pure wrestling or the wrestling-jiu-jitsu combo. So you have to mix it up just a little bit.
[01:08:33] You can't do just strictly wrestling or you'll get your neck choked. Oh, yeah. So that's why you have to. I always ask what you want me to train you specifically in. So. But this Saturday I'll be in Sparta training some of the jiu-jitsu guys there. I don't even know the name of the gym in Sparta, but they're all CrossFit guys. They're all big, big muscular. And so I have to. Humble them. Establish my dominance first. Okay.
[01:09:04] You're going to tell them. Are you going to wear like one of those suits that has like your passion? No, it has those abs in. Yes. Yes. Just go get us. Tell them at the spray tanner to like spray tan the abs on. You know. Just to show. So, but again, you know, with all your credentials and stuff and, you know, tell everybody real quickly how wrestling helped you become the man you are today because with all that stuff you've been doing. Oh, yeah. Listen, wrestling gives you confidence. I would say that's the biggest thing it gives you.
[01:09:34] And you don't fear as much. I mean, just, you know, kind of dangerous situations. You're just not as fearful as you probably would be if you had never trained any sort of, you know, fighting style. So, I would say that's the biggest thing is that you're just less afraid of what someone can do to you. You know, kind of know how to handle yourself. And, yeah, that's the biggest thing. It's just confidence.
[01:10:00] And, you know, that's what I take away from it. For young wrestlers, the mistakes I made would be I didn't try enough moves because when you're in a wrestling practice, all you're wanting to do is just dominate, dominate, dominate. You shouldn't have that attitude. You should be failing a lot because when you fail a lot, you learn the most.
[01:10:30] And so, just try new moves because you're so afraid. Don't be afraid. I should have tried so many moves because the knowledge I have now to compare when I had, you know, back then, I should have failed more. And I know that's kind of, you know, oxymoron, but I should have failed more. And so, that would have made me a lot better wrestler back then when I was younger. And so, with Pat and what he does with working with young players, and I saw it tonight,
[01:10:59] one of the young men, Pat was showing him what he could have done to finish a move better. Simple. It's a simple. I know it's easier said than done, but little simple moves can change the whole outcome of the wrestling match. Yeah. And it's true. Just little things. Just work on the little things and you'll improve. And I was trying to show that one fellow how to get out of when someone has you just,
[01:11:26] all you just, one wrist control and you're out, you're back on the mat. But it takes experience. It takes somebody who's been there and done that. And I'll tell you, just being Pat's brother and knowing what high school wrestling was like to a degree, but then seeing what, when he got to college and seeing how much more knowledge he got. I mean, it wasn't fun to wrestle with Pat anymore once he got to college because then he learned all these things and Pat actually wrestled under an Olympian coach, Terry Brands. Terry Brands, yeah.
[01:11:55] And so, yeah. We had some differences though, but. Well, I wasn't going to bring that up, but that's okay. But that's how intense the wrestling can get. And so, and then we've actually had some guys that we wrestled with back in Memphis. One of our guys, a few of them wound up going into MMA and one of them became really, really popular. Shout out to. Brian Hall. To Brian Hall and. Joey Elmore. Joey Elmore.
[01:12:24] Ray Johnson. But. What's his name? He played Mr. T. Rampage. Rampage. Quentin Jackson. Yeah. Yeah. Raleigh. We had some stories. He was one of our wrestlers that we wrestled with. Yeah. His coach and our coach were best friends. And let's, hey, let's send a shout out to coach. Coach Cottrell. Yeah. Coach Cottrell. Oh, Phil. Listen. Okay. Okay. So.
[01:12:58] People who inspire you. And. We didn't have a lot of money growing up. I don't know if Brian told you. We didn't have a lot of money. And our coach. Pick us up. From our. Podunk neighborhood. And take us to Germantown. To wrestle every day. Yeah. And. And he wasn't rich either. He picked us up in his. Kind of. Trash truck. And he'd pick us up.
[01:13:28] And he took us every day. Because he wanted. He's. Passionately. Wanted us. A good coach. Will get you better. Yeah. A good coach. And he doesn't even have to know a lot. He can just put you in the right place. Yeah. And get you better. So. So coach. Change your world. And you can see. He did that with our family. And so. We're very blessed. Shout out coach. Cottrell. We're going to tag you in this. Or find out some way to get this to you. But we love you. And we thank you for everything you should do. And that's.
[01:13:56] We've talked a lot about coaches here. Yeah. And we're so excited to be doing our coaching show. And show some love to our coaches. So. Maybe we can get your coach on the show. I can do that. We're still tight. Yeah. I went to his wedding. About. Eight years ago. He got. He remarried. And. I loved it. And he's still a great guy. He's a salty Navy guy. But I love him. We love him. And look. Being here tonight.
[01:14:24] We saw a lot of coaches working with these young people. Yeah. And we're going to get Coach Harris on. Hopefully next week. Yep. To plan on. For when. When we go to state. We'll talk more about the upcoming matches. Yep. How the year has been. And he might be one of our first coaches. That we interview. For the coaching show coming up. So. Yep. Guys. Thank y'all for letting us come out tonight. Thank you for being on. Yes. And watching us. We're so. So appreciative. Of you guys. That tuned in for wrestling. We'll do some more tag. And message us on here. Shout outs to all you guys.

[01:15:23] What's going on in Warren County. And as always. Thank you. Thank you Pat. To the Carr family. I love the Carr family. They mean a lot to me. It's the swim team. And everything. Oh yeah. And his wife. I mean. We went to church back in the day. When we were still in diapers. So everybody knows everybody somehow. This is my mom's favorite. Oh. Now my middle brother Lee's the next favorite. She's the musician. So we got the athlete and musician. I'm just a big fan boy. No. Stop it. Shout out to Donna. Shout out to Donna. With that said. Take care. God bless.
[01:15:53] Enjoy the rest of the day. And remember Warren County. Keep it first. Keep it first. Keep it first. Keep it first. Keep it first.
